Create a Humanoid Model (fbx) file for Unity with MakeHuman

With MakeHuman, I will briefly explain how to create a Humanoid model that can be used with Unity.

  1. When MakeHuman is started, the following window will be displayed.

  2. With the "Main" tab on the "Modeling" tab selected, set the person's parameters on Macro.
  3. Set as a parameter for Gender, Age, Muscle, Weight, Height, Proportion, Race (African, Asian, Caucasian). Here I set the parameters for Asian men 24 years old.

  4. With the "Clothes" tab on the "Geometries" tab selected, specify the clothes.
  5. Here, I select "Male casualsuit01" and "Shoes01".

  6. With "Hair" tab on the "Geometries" tab, specify the hair style.
  7. Here, I selected "Short02".

  8. With "Skin/Material" tab on the "Materials" tab selected, specify "Skin".
  9. Here I selected "Young asian male".

  10. [IMPORTANT]With the "Skeleton" tab on the "Pose/Animate" selected, specify "Rig presets".
  11. To import it into Unity as a Humanoid, you MUST select "Game engine".

  12. [Optional] With the "Pose" tab on the "Pose/Animate" tab selected, select "Tpose".
  13. If you just import it into Unity, you can leave the default "None" setting for Pose. However, considering what to use when using other tools, it would be better to set it "Tpose".

  14. With the "Export" tab on the "Files" tab selected, set the format of output file.
  15. Check the following items.

    Mesh Format Filmbox (fbx)
    Options Feet on ground
    Binary FBX
    Scale units decimeter

  16. With "Export" tab on the "Files" tab selected, type the file name in the input field at the top of the window and click the "Export" button.
  17. In this case, I declared "AsianBoy" as "an Asian yound man". A FBX file and some PNG files are generated in the following path.

    Documents/makehuman/v1/exports/AsianBoy.fbx
                                  /textures/*.png

  18. With the "Save" tab on the "Files" tab selected, type the file name in the input field at the top of the window and click the "Save" button.
  19. This will save the file used by MakeHuman in the following location.

    Documents/makehuman/v1/models/AsianBoy.mhm
                                 /AsianBoy.thumb

  20. Here is the data makehuman.zip created by MakeHuman by the method explained here.
